A study appearing in Alternative Medicine Review (2010 July; 15(2): 136-46) looked at the affect acupuncture treatment had on children with autism spectrum disorder. The 55 children in the randomized, double-blind study received either 12 electro-acupuncture treatments or sham treatment over a period of four weeks. The group receiving the actual acupuncture experienced significant improvements in language comprehension as evaluated by the Functional Independence Measure for Children (WeeFIM), the self-care caregiver assistant domain of the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory )PEDI) and the Clinical Global Impression-Improvement when compared to the control group.
