A study appearing in Wiener Klinische Wochenschrift (2006; 118(1-2): 36-42) looked at 23 patients with TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders.  The subjects were randomly divided into two groups. They were evaluated for pain, tenderness, sensitivity to pressure, opening and movement. One group received acupuncture and the other group received sham laser treatment as a placebo. The group receiving the acupuncture had significant improvement in pain and tenderness, and some improvement in the ability to open and closing the mouth. The placebo group did not enjoy these improvements.
