Bisphenol A (BPA) is a common chemical used to manufacture plastic items such as food containers and water bottles. It is commonly found in light, thin plastics, like the plastic used in water bottles. Research appearing in the Journal of the American Medical Association (2008, Sept. 17;300(11):1303-10) looked at information obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Urine samples were analyzed in 1,455 subjects and it was found that high BPA levels were associated with increased risk for heart disease, angina, heart attack and diabetes. Liver enzymes (tested to indicate cell destruction in the liver) also tended to be elevated in subjects with high BPA levels.
