citrus peelInsulin insensitivity is an epidemic problem. It is related to type 2 diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Recent research appearing in Life Science (June 20, 2006: 20;79[4]365-73) shows that extracts from citrus peels, known as polymethoxylated flavones, may improve insulin sensitivity. Hamsters were fed a high sugar diet for two weeks, in order to produce insulin resistance and high triglycerides. They were then given either a low dose of the flavones or a high dose. Four weeks of supplementation helped bring the insulin insensitivity under control.
