In traditional Chinese medicine, the herbal formula Xinwei Decoction is commonly used for patients who experience depressive symptoms alongside digestive complaints such as functional dyspepsia. A study published in the American Journal of Chinese Medicine (2005;33(2):249–257) evaluated the effects of this herbal combination on both digestive and mood-related symptoms.

The study included 73 participants who were assessed using the Functional Dyspepsia (FD) scale and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale at baseline and again at the end of the trial. Subjects were randomly divided into three groups: one group received domperidone (a dopamine antagonist commonly used for symptoms such as bloating, nausea, and delayed gastric emptying), one group received Xinwei Decoction, and a third group received a placebo.

The intervention lasted eight weeks. At the conclusion of the study, participants receiving the herbal formula showed significantly greater improvements on both the FD scale and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale compared with those receiving either domperidone or placebo. In the Xinwei Decoction group, approximately 70% of participants were reported to have resolution of anxiety and depressive symptoms, while no comparable improvement in mood symptoms was observed in either the drug or placebo groups.

These findings suggest that certain traditional herbal formulations may influence both gastrointestinal and psychological symptoms in individuals with functional dyspepsia and coexisting depression. As with many studies in this area, further well-controlled trials would be needed to confirm results and clarify mechanisms.
