A small study published in Hypertension—Journal of the American Heart Association (online ahead of print, February 4, 2008) examined the short-term effects of beetroot juice on blood pressure in healthy adults. Fourteen participants were asked to drink either 500 mL of beetroot juice or an equivalent amount of water.
Blood pressure was measured every 15 minutes during the hour before consumption and for three hours afterward. Measurements were then taken hourly for the next 21 hours. Participants who consumed the beetroot juice experienced a significant reduction in blood pressure, with the effect still evident up to 24 hours after ingestion.
Although limited by its small size, this study suggests that compounds naturally present in beetroot juice may influence blood pressure regulation, even in otherwise healthy individuals. Larger studies are needed to better understand the duration and clinical relevance of this response.
