Fennel seed has a long history of traditional use as an antispasmodic—helping relax smooth muscle—and for supporting intestinal motility. Because infant colic is often associated with gas, abdominal discomfort, and digestive spasms, fennel has been studied as a possible supportive option.
A study published in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine (2003;9(4):58–61) evaluated fennel’s effects in 125 infants between two and twelve weeks of age who were diagnosed with colic. The infants were randomly given either:
-
A placebo, or
-
An emulsion containing fennel seed
Study outcome
Researchers defined “relief from colic” as reducing total crying time to nine hours per week or less by the end of the treatment period.
The results:
-
65% of infants receiving the fennel emulsion experienced relief
-
Slightly more than 23% of infants in the placebo group achieved relief
These findings suggest that fennel seed may help support digestive comfort in some infants with colic, possibly due to its traditional antispasmodic properties. As always, caregivers should work with a qualified pediatric clinician when addressing infant symptoms.
