A double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in the Oncology Nursing Forum (2010; 37(2):213–221) examined the effects of grape juice consumption on nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing chemotherapy.
The study included 77 cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, who were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo or 4 ounces of grape juice prior to meals following each of four chemotherapy cycles. Compared with the placebo group, patients who consumed the grape juice vomited less frequently and reported less nausea and distress. Grape juice is a source of polyphenols–natural antioxidants.
