Research published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology (2000;95:157–165) examined the relationship between pain medication use and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

In a survey of 892 adults aged 30 to 64, IBS symptoms were reported by 12% of respondents. Use of pain medications—particularly non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)—was significantly associated with the presence of IBS symptoms.

The findings support the clinical observation that gastrointestinal symptoms may develop months after initiating pain medication, even when the original injury has long resolved.
