Research published in Bone (E-published ahead of print, April 4, 2011) examined the relationship between vitamin K status and bone mineral density in 365 elderly adults. This cross-sectional study found that:

  • Higher dietary vitamin K intake was significantly associated with higher bone mineral density.

  • Subjects with greater vitamin K consumption experienced less bone loss over time.

The findings suggest that increasing vitamin K intake may help protect against age-related bone loss, although more research is needed to confirm whether supplementation has the same effect.
