Silymarin and Blood Sugar Control
Silymarin, an antioxidant extract from milk thistle, has been studied for its potential benefits in conditions marked by oxidative stress—one of the key drivers of complications in diabetes.
A double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Phytotherapy Research (Vol. 20, Issue 12, 2006; 1036–1039) evaluated whether silymarin could improve metabolic markers in people with type 2 diabetes.
The study followed 51 adults for four months.
-
Twenty-five participants received 200 mg of silymarin three times per day.
-
Twenty-six received a placebo.
By the end of the study, the silymarin group showed measurable improvements, including:
-
Lower fasting blood glucose
-
Reduced hemoglobin A1c
-
Decreases in triglycerides
-
Lower total cholesterol
-
Lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol
These findings suggest that silymarin may support metabolic health in people with type 2 diabetes, likely through its antioxidant effects.
