Flavonoids are a type of polyphenol. They are a class of water-soluble plant pigments found in fruits, vegetables, and certain beverages. They have antioxidant effects, helping protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals contribute to oxidative stress, which can lead to cellular damage. Diets high in fruits and vegetables tend to be rich in flavonoids.

There may be another benefit to flavonoids in the diet: weight control. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2008; 88(5): 1341–1352) examined dietary intake and lifestyle factors in 4,280 men and women and tracked changes in body mass index (BMI) over 14 years. Although BMI increased in both men and women over time, women with the highest flavonoid intake gained significantly less weight than those with the lowest intake. This association was not observed in men. The authors suggested that flavonoid-rich diets may influence metabolism, inflammation, or insulin sensitivity, particularly in women.
