A small study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiologic Therapeutics (Nov/Dec 1999; 22(9):582–585) explored whether chiropractic care might influence premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms. The study included 25 women who were randomly assigned to receive either chiropractic adjustments or “sham” adjustments.
Participants were followed for nine months and evaluated using a standardized PMS questionnaire. Women who received chiropractic care reported a reduction in PMS symptoms over the course of the study, while those receiving sham adjustments did not experience similar improvements.
Because of the small sample size, the findings are considered preliminary. However, the results suggest that spinal manipulation may influence symptom perception or physiologic responses related to PMS, warranting further investigation in larger, well-controlled studies.
