A small exploratory study published in Mitochondrion (epublished ahead of print April 7, 2011) examined coenzyme Q10 status in five patients with fibromyalgia. The subjects were given 300 mg of coenzyme Q10 per day for nine months.
Patients who were found to be deficient in coenzyme Q10 experienced a significant reduction in symptoms following supplementation. Although the study was very small, the findings support the hypothesis that mitochondrial dysfunction and impaired energy production may contribute to symptoms in at least a subset of patients with fibromyalgia.
