What Is Excess Cortisol (Hyperadrenia)?
(Educational only — not medical advice)
Do you ever feel tired and wired at the same time?
Snapping at people over small things?
Craving salty or sweet foods in the evening?
Waking up at 3 a.m. with your mind wide awake?
A lot of people just call that “stress.”
But there’s something bigger going on behind the scenes.
It has to do with a hormone called cortisol.
A Quick Look at Cortisol
Cortisol is your stress hormone — it helps you wake up, focus, and survive emergencies.
A little bit of cortisol = good.
Too much, for too long = trouble.
When your brain thinks you’re “in danger” 24/7 (even if it’s just bills, traffic, or too many notifications)… your body pushes cortisol production into high gear.
Chiropractors have used the term “hyperadrenia” for decades to describe this overactive stress response.
Today, modern science calls it chronic cortisol overload.
Signs You May Have Excess Cortisol
(These aren’t medical diagnoses — just common patterns people notice.)
- Tired in the morning… wired at night
• Cravings — especially carbs and salty snacks
• Brain fog and trouble focusing
• Feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or irritable
• Weight gain around the belly
• Hard time falling asleep or staying asleep
• Getting sick more often
• Muscle pain, headaches, or back tightness
Your brain and body are trying to help you survive…
but they’re stuck in stress mode.
What Happens Inside the Body?
When cortisol stays high:
- Inflammation goes up
- Immune function goes down
- Mood and memory take a hit
- Blood sugar becomes harder to control
- Sleep gets disrupted
- Metabolism slows down
Long term, this can raise the risk of:
- Anxiety + depression
• Type 2 diabetes
• Weight gain (especially belly fat)
• Chronic pain
• Cognitive decline as we age
Your body wasn’t designed to run a marathon of stress every day.
The Good News
Stress doesn’t have to run the show.
There are drug-free ways to help your stress system reset:
- Mindfulness practices
• Better sleep habits
• Adaptogenic herbs (like ashwagandha)
• Nutrients that help your brain relax
• Gentle chiropractic and movement therapies
• Social connection and joy (yes — joy is medicine!)
We’ll explore these one by one in the next few articles.
