Postprandial glucose refers to the level of sugar in the blood after a meal. In people with type 2 diabetes, postprandial glucose levels are often elevated and may contribute to symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, dry mouth, and difficulty concentrating.
Research published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine (July 11, 2014; Volume 14, Article 237) examined the effects of fermented red ginseng (FRG) on postprandial glucose levels in individuals with impaired glucose regulation. The study included 42 participants with either impaired fasting glucose or type 2 diabetes, who were randomly assigned to receive fermented red ginseng or a placebo three times daily for four weeks.
At the end of the study period, the group receiving fermented red ginseng demonstrated significantly lower postprandial glucose levels compared with the placebo group. The authors concluded, “Daily supplementation with fermented red ginseng lowered postprandial glucose levels in subjects with impaired fasting glucose or type 2 diabetes.”
