A prospective study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine (2006; 166(14):1490–1497) followed 2,487 adults aged 70 to 79 years who were free of heart failure and coronary heart disease at baseline. Over the course of follow-up, light to moderate alcohol consumption—defined as one to seven drinks per week—was associated with lower rates of cardiac events and all-cause mortality compared with abstention. As an observational study, the findings do not establish causation.
