Most People Coming of GLP-1 Drugs Regain the Weight
The research is sobering. Most people who stop weight-loss drugs may return to their starting weight within about 18 months to two years. Even improvements in cardiovascular and metabolic risk markers tend to reverse after the drugs are stopped [1]. Fat cells contain leptin, a hormone that warns the brain about possible starvation [click to read more about leptin]. We are hard wired to prevent weight loss. With that in mind, here are some strategies for minimizing rebound weight gain.
An Important First Step to Minimize Weight Gain After Ozempic
Use GLP-1 to Imbed a Healthy Lifestyle
GLP-1 drugs can go a long way in keeping hunger and cravings under control. You eat less and therefore lose weight, but if you are really smart about it, you can set the stage for permanent change. Here are some strategies:
Use reduced appetite to enable you to control what you eat and when you eat. Take the opportunity to hard wire some good eating habits that will serve you after you stop taking the drug.
- Eat to create a healthy microbiome: Research shows that there is a difference between the microbiomes of thin people and fat people. Eating a diet that is high in polyphenols and fiber (translation: vegetables), and low in processed and refined foods will improve the quality of your microbiome. Download the Roadmap to Health.
- Develop habits that help keep insulin production under control: Eat only at meals. Absolutely do not eat between dinner and bedtime. Eat only foods with a low glycemic load (<10). Download the Roadmap to Health.
- Eat only protein for breakfast. The protein breakfast will decrease ghrelin (the “hunger” hormone) and increase GLP-1 [2,10]. You can have something like avocado or tomato with your protein but avoid fruit and starch.
- Build muscle/ Lift weights: This can help you get more out of resistance exercise and support rebuilding or preserving muscle—especially important because some of the weight lost on GLP-1 drugs is lean tissue [5,6].
Talk to Your Doctor About Weaning From GLP-1
Wean from the drug. Do not quit all at once. Have your doctor gradually lower the dose. This will enable you to acclimate to not having the drug.
Supplements May Help Appetite When You Quit GLP-1
Supplementation is sometimes useful. Just to be clear, there is no single supplement that does what GLP-1 drugs do. However, supplementation can help with leptin. Here are a few suggestions:
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Leptin resistance is tied to inflammation, and omega-3s may improve the adiponectin/leptin picture and inflammatory signaling. Evidence on leptin levels is mixed, but omega-3s fit the mechanism well [3].
- Curcumin/Turmeric: Meta-analyses found curcumin increased adiponectin and reduced leptin in adults, with effects also seen in metabolic syndrome/obesity research [8,9].
- Vitamin D: Low vitamin D is associated with higher leptin and insulin resistance; supplementation improves insulin sensitivity in obese adolescents. This is correcting a deficiency, not as a leptin “treatment.” An inexpensive lab test will find vitamin D deficiency [4].
- Take Creatine: Creatine expands your muscles’ capacity to perform intense work by rapidly resynthesizing Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) [7].
