Ingredients
- 36 chicken wings (about 3 lbs.)
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- ½ cup chopped onion
- ½ cup honey
- 2 tomatoes, pureed
- ¼ cup bourbon or whiskey
- ½ teaspoon hot chili garlic sauce. Optional—click here for the recipe. It may not be Crohn’s friendly if you use a commercial sauce.
- ½ cup Paleo-friendly mayonnaise ([Click here for the recipe]– avoid commercial mayonnaise)
Instructions
- Cut tips off wings; cut wings in half at the joint.
- In a medium saucepan, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes or until golden.
- Add honey, pureed tomatoes, bourbon, and hot pepper sauce. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until sauce thickens slightly. Remove from heat.
- Whisk in Paleo mayonnaise until smooth. Do not use commercial mayonnaise, it will not be SCD appropriate. Click here for recipe to make Paleo mayonnaise.
- Grill or broil chicken wings, turning occasionally and brushing frequently with sauce, for 15 minutes or until thoroughly cooked.
- You can garnish with some sliced green onions.
Note: Straight bourbon is generally considered permissible on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) because the distillation process removes gluten and other starches from the grains used in its production. However, the SCD does caution that alcohol can cause inflammation, overgrowth of bacteria, and intestinal permeability, so it’s important to consume it in moderation and be aware of potential negative effects on your gut health.
