Euphrasia officinalis (eyebright) is listed in the German Commission E Monographs for uses that include inflamed eyes, coughs, colds, and catarrh (inflammation of the mucous membranes). It has been noted as particularly useful when allergic responses contribute to sinusitis (Clinical Botanical Medicine, p. 209).
Euphrasia officinalis contains iridoid monoterpenes, lignans, flavonoids, tannins, small amounts of alkaloids, glycosides, sterols, and volatile oils. Traditionally, it has been used for allergic conditions affecting the eyes, middle ear, sinuses, and nasal passages.
The astringent properties of eyebright are thought to help protect mucous membranes of the eyes, which may reduce inflammation associated with allergic reactions such as hay fever or exposure to air pollution.
