Vitamin B12 plays key roles in brain function, nerve health, and red blood cell production. Low B12 can contribute to cognitive symptoms that may appear similar to age-related memory conditions.

A study in the Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging (2012) evaluated 130 nursing home residents and found:

  • 14% were B12 deficient
  • 36% were borderline deficient
  • Deficiency was less common in those taking a daily multivitamin
  • Residents using antipsychotic medications were more likely to have low B12

Early signs of low B12 may include:

  • Forgetfulness
  • Poor concentration or slow thinking
  • Fatigue
  • Low mood or depression

When severe, B12 deficiency can mimic Alzheimer’s disease, making it important to check levels and support healthy intake under professional guidance.
