Research published in PLoS Genetics (2009; 5(3):e1000408) examined the effect of glucose (sugar) on the lifespan of yeast cells. Yeast cells were used because they share key aging pathways with human cells. The researchers found that when the amount of glucose in the cells’ growth medium was reduced, the lifespan of the yeast cells increased, suggesting that lower sugar availability may influence cellular aging processes.
