Bioflavonoids are a class of water-soluble plant pigments found in fruits, vegetables, and certain beverages that have antioxidant effects. Antioxidants help protect cells from damage caused by reactive chemicals known as free radicals, which can contribute to oxidative stress and cellular injury. Hesperidin is a citrus-derived bioflavonoid that offers nutritional support similar to other bioflavonoids such as quercetin. It is known to support vascular health by strengthening capillaries and also functions as an antioxidant. In research published in Chicago Medicine (March 7, 1964), 94 postmenopausal women (36 surgically menopausal and 58 physiologically menopausal) were given a supplement containing 50 mg of hesperidin complex, 150 mg of hesperidin methyl chalcone, and 200 mg of vitamin C. A comparison group received calcium carbonate, salicylamide, and an estrogenic substance. The group receiving the vitamin C and bioflavonoid combination experienced greater relief from hot flashes than the control group. The proposed mechanism was improved capillary integrity and reduced vasodilation, which may help moderate the vascular changes associated with hot flashes.
