Between 1996 and 2006, the use of anxiolytic medications, antidepressants, and antipsychotic drugs increased substantially in the United States. During this decade, use of these medications rose by approximately 73% in adults and 50% in children. Among individuals over the age of 65, use of psychotropic medications doubled over the same period.

By 2006, an estimated 16% of elderly individuals were taking some form of psychotropic medication. During this same time frame, the number of children diagnosed with and treated for mental health conditions also doubled.

These data were compiled by researchers using information from the National Center for Health Statistics, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and the Social Security Administration.
