This article builds on our overview of Vitamin B6 and Depression, expanding into B6’s wider roles in hormone balance, anemia, heart health, and nerve function.

B6, Anemia and Energy

Vitamin B6 is crucial for hemoglobin production and red blood cell function. Deficiency may contribute to anemia—particularly in women of childbearing age [8, 30]. Many are given iron supplements when low B6 is the real problem.

B6, PMS and Hormone Balance

Several studies show benefit from B6 for premenstrual symptoms.

  • A 3-month trial found that 50 mg/day of vitamin B6 reduced PMS-related depression, irritability, and fatigue by 69 % [12].
  • A larger retrospective review of 630 women reported good or complete relief in 40 – 60 % of patients taking 100 – 200 mg/day of pyridoxine [13].

B6 Helps with Brain and Nervous System Support

The active form, PLP, helps produce neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, GABA, and histamine [3].
Low B6 levels are linked with depression and anxiety [14 – 16]. Adequate B6 also supports cognitive function, sleep quality, and focus.

B6, Heart and Circulation

Low B6 is associated with higher homocysteine and increased risk of heart disease [17].
In one trial, siblings of patients with early atherothrombotic disease who received 5 mg folic acid plus 250 mg B6 daily for 2 years had fewer cardiovascular events [18].

Other Clinical Research

  • Asthma: In children, 200 mg/day of B6 improved symptoms and reduced medication needs [19].
  • Migraine: Folic acid plus B6 supplementation reduced migraine severity [19].
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome: Multiple studies [20 – 22] link low B6 with symptoms and show improvement from supplementation.
  • Diabetic neuropathy: Combination B-vitamin therapy (including B6) supports nerve function [23 – 24].
  • Sleep and dreaming: Small trials [25 – 26] suggest B6 may enhance dream recall and vividness—likely via serotonin pathways.

Taurine Connection

B6 acts as a cofactor for converting cysteine to taurine, an amino acid important for cardiovascular regulation. Taurine supplementation improves blood pressure and lipid profiles [27 – 29], highlighting another indirect benefit of maintaining healthy B6 status.
