Eczema? Probiotics May Help

Eczema is one of the most common skin conditions in infants and young children. Researchers have found that the microbiome may play a role in its development. Researchers found that it was less of a problem if the mother took probiotics during pregnancy. The authors of one study concluded, “Probiotic supplements taken during pregnancy and/or during infancy produces a significant decline in the incidence of eczema.”

Should the infant have eczema, giving him or her probiotics may improve the situation. One study looked at changes in Bifidobacteria levels and severity of eczema as measured by the Scoring Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) index. It found that probiotic supplementation has a positive effect on the prevention and treatment of infantile eczema.

Try this:

  • If you are pregnant, take a probiotic,  2x/day.
  • If your baby has eczema, open a capsule and add it to milk or formula once each day. If you are breast feeding, simply place a little of the powder on the baby’s tongue, 2x/day.
