An open-label, randomized crossover study published in Biofactors examined the effects of antioxidant supplementation on asthma symptoms in 41 adults aged 25–50 with bronchial asthma. For the first four months, one group received standard asthma therapy plus a combination of coenzyme Q10, vitamin C, and alpha-tocopherol, while the control group received standard therapy alone. During the second four months, the interventions were reversed.
Patients receiving the antioxidant–CoQ10 combination showed clinical improvement compared with periods of standard therapy alone. The researchers also noted that patients who required corticosteroids tended to have lower plasma CoQ10 levels, consistent with earlier observations. Supplementation was associated with a reduced need for corticosteroid medication in some subjects.
The authors concluded that combining coenzyme Q10 with antioxidant vitamins may offer supportive benefit in asthma management. Other natural approaches can also help.
