A randomized, sham-controlled study published in Alternative Medicine Review evaluated electro-acupuncture in 55 children with autism spectrum disorder. After four weeks, children receiving electro-acupuncture showed greater improvements in language comprehension and self-care measures, as well as overall clinical improvement scores, compared with the sham treatment group. The findings suggest potential functional benefits, though larger and longer studies are needed. These findings do not suggest a cure, but indicate that certain supportive therapies may help specific functional domains in some children.
