Nutrition, Diet, and Autism
Autism remains a complex condition, and no single treatment works for everyone. However, researchers have explored several nutritional and dietary approaches that may benefit some individuals.
One of the most studied is the combination of vitamin B6 and magnesium. More than 20 published studies, including multiple double-blind, placebo-controlled trials, have reported improvements in behavior and neurological function in some children with autism.
Diet has also received considerable attention. Several studies have found that some children improve on a gluten-free, casein-free (GFCF) diet, with reported benefits in behavior, communication, attention, and social interaction. Not every child responds, but dietary intervention may be worthwhile in selected cases.
Researchers have also found evidence that immune activation and inflammation may play a role in at least some forms of autism. Studies have reported intestinal inflammation in some children as well as increased inflammatory markers within the brain, suggesting that immune dysfunction may contribute to symptoms in certain individuals.
Together, these findings suggest that nutrition, diet, and inflammation deserve consideration as part of a comprehensive approach to autism. While these strategies are not cures, they may provide meaningful support for some individuals.
