Solidago virgaurea (European goldenrod) contains flavonoids, saponins, and phenolic glycosides. The German Commission E Monographs recommend Solidago virgaurea as irrigation therapy for inflammatory conditions of the lower urinary tract and also note its mild antispasmodic activity.

In addition to its traditional use for bladder and urinary tract inflammation, S. virgaurea has also been used for allergies and related symptoms.

Solidago virgaurea is primarily valued for its aquaretic action, meaning it promotes increased water excretion without significant loss of electrolytes. This distinguishes it from true diuretics, which increase the excretion of both water and electrolytes. This aquaretic effect has been noted by the University of Maryland Medical Center.
