TL;DR

  • Multivitamins improved mood, alertness, and task performance in both men and women.

  • Participants taking vitamins reported less fatigue and stress compared with placebo.

  • Regular multivitamin use may help support mental clarity and emotional balance.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Human Psychopharmacology (2010;25(6):448–461) looked at the effects of a daily multivitamin on 216 women aged 25–50. After nine weeks, the group taking the multivitamin showed better mood, less fatigue, and faster, more accurate task performance compared to placebo.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in older men (Harris et al., Human Psychopharmacology 2011;26(8):560–567) found that daily multivitamin intake significantly reduced depression, anxiety and stress scores, and improved alertness and daily functioning. A later open-access trial (Scholey et al., Nutrients 2013;5(9):3589-3604) confirmed benefits for mood and cognitive performance in younger adults.

Together, these studies suggest that daily multivitamin supplementation may support mental energy, mood balance, and cognitive performance in healthy adults.
