A study published in Wiener Klinische Wochenschrift (2006; 118(1–2):36–42) examined 23 patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups and evaluated for pain, tenderness, pressure sensitivity, and jaw opening and movement.
One group received acupuncture, while the comparison group received sham laser treatment as a placebo. Patients in the acupuncture group reported reductions in pain and tenderness, along with some improvement in jaw opening and closing. These changes were not observed in the placebo group.
