Niacin (vitamin B3) has long been recognized for its ability to support cardiovascular health.
A clinical trial published in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology (2018 May–Jun; 12(3):810-821.e1) found that supplementing with extended-release nicotinic acid for eight weeks significantly lowered triglycerides, reduced inflammatory markers, and increased HDL (“good”) cholesterol — all markers of improved heart health.
Several earlier studies have also shown that niacin helps to lower total and LDL cholesterol. In a comparative study (Archives of Internal Medicine, 1994 Jul 25;154(14):1586-95), niacin performed as well as certain cholesterol-lowering medications, but without the same pharmaceutical side effects.
Long-term follow-up data reinforce niacin’s protective role. In the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (1986 Dec;8(6):1245-55), long-term niacin use was associated with a reduction in overall mortality from cardiovascular disease.
