Vitamin D Levels and Back Pain in Older Adults
Research published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (Vol. 56, Issue 5) examined whether the relationship between vitamin D status and pain differs between men and women. The study included 958 adults over age 65 and assessed vitamin D levels alongside reports of low back and lower-extremity pain.
Overall, 58% of women and 27% of men reported at least moderate pain in the low back or legs.
The findings showed:
-
Women with low vitamin D levels had a significantly higher risk of low back pain—a 96% increase compared to women with adequate levels.
-
Low vitamin D levels were not linked to lower-extremity pain.
-
No similar association was found in men.
These results suggest that maintaining healthy vitamin D levels may be especially important for older women experiencing chronic low back pain.
