According to a study published in the March 15, 2004 issue of the British Medical Journal, acupuncture can offer meaningful relief to people suffering from headaches. More than 400 headache patients from England and Wales participated in the study. All were individuals who experienced several headaches each week.
The subjects were divided into two groups. One group received acupuncture in addition to standard medical care, undergoing 12 acupuncture treatments over a three-month period. The other group received standard headache treatment alone.
Patients who received acupuncture experienced significantly better outcomes than those who did not. On average, they used 15% less medication, had 22 fewer headache days per year, and made 25% fewer doctor visits compared to the group receiving standard care alone.
